When I traveled to Kyoto for five months, the novelty of everything I was seeing, mixed with the isolation and loneliness I had to endure, caused an intense shift in perception. The superimpositions between different selves, moving from one part of my life to another, my day to day life in Kyoto contrasted to the mystery that surrounded my whole trip sharpened my eyes toward seeing a double world in puddles, windows, lakes, the glass of microwaves. This picture is taken in Arashiyama, a neighborhood of Kyoto right after I had a long conversation through droopy eyes with a monkey who was hiding in the shade of my bench. I always think of these ending lyrics of a Nick Cave song, “But the brown ape escaped / and was heard to roam the ranges / clanking its heavy chain / down in the valley it sang to his friend / whom he may never see again”.
