We are sitting in the afternoon heat trying to not get a sunstroke or a cancerous burn under a tent we built ourselves on a path between the pond and the sea. She is smoking a cigarette and has the body structure and temperament of a praying mantis. We are all reading Salinger at the time. She doesn't care. Some people are playing ball and drinking beer, others are wearing oversized glasses and enjoying that fact. Me and her catch grasshoppers in the grass.
